The town of CelŪkovice is situated in the Labe (Elbe) river lowlands, 25 km to north-east from Prague. The river forms its northern border and it has been an integral part of the life of the town, just as the landscape along the river, composed of meadows and forests. Many archaeological findings provide evidence of continuous settlement of this locality since the early Stone Age. The town's base became a Slavonic settlement, proven to have existed in the 9th century. The first record of CelŪkovice dates back to 1290. In the early "ancient settlement period", a fortress was constructed in this location, and at the end of the 12th century, the Romanesque tribune Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built, forming the "Small Castle" with the neighbouring fortress and a mill. The church was rebuilt in Baroque style and significantly extended between 1708 and 1712. The fort has also changed its appearance in the corse of centuries and finally, it was reconstructed between 1973 and 1982 into a Gothic-Renaissance building. Today, it is a Protected Cultural Monument and the seat of the Municipal Museum. On the eastern side of the church is another example of a cultural monument - the Deanery, a multi-storey palace building, which was built in 1782. In the 16th century, a municipal house was erected at the upper part of the town square. The house was later completely reconstructed into a Baroque-revival building, which is the Town Hall today. For centuries, the inhabitants of the town lived mainly on agriculture, fishing and, starting at the beginning of the 19th century, on basketry. Today, this is displayed in a basketry exposition in the Municipal Museum. The surrounding countryside with the forests and pools provides many beauties, and therefore it is a place for relaxation even today, with hiking and biking paths. City of CelŪkovice represents also an important center of the education. CMC Graduate School of Bussiness was open in 1991 as an internationally recognized university offering the MBA degree to students from various countries. |
